Shin 慎 (Shinjuku)

You have to try this place if you want a combination of excellent homemade udon noodles and perfectly crisp tempura. The tempura-udon sets range in price from about ¥1,000 to ¥1,500, and you can have them either cold or hot. This resto is extremely popular so you might have to queue to get in but it is well worth it! The restaurant is technically in Shibuya ward but it is located at about a 7-minute walk from the South Exit of the Shinjuku Station.

Tachitenmaru 立天まる (Shimbashi)

Tachitenmaru is a small standing-style izakaya near the Shimbashi Station. You can get nice and very cheap tempura assortments for just ¥700. You should try this kind of tavern if you haven't already! Standing-style taverns are so typically Japanese and are known to have great quality for the price.

Mitsumura 光村 (Shimbashi)

This is another great address not too far from the Shimbashi Station. You can have there a different kind of tempura, one that is made with "anago" which are salt water eal. The outside of these large pieces of eel is golden and cripy and the inside is quite soft. They also have some great tendon bowls with a generous amount of tempura toppings!

Tsukiji Tentatsu つきじ天辰 (Tsukiji)

This tempura restaurant in Tsukiji is very particular about the freshness of their ingredients and serves one of the best affordable tempura set meals there is. A popular option is the egg yolk tempura set (¥1,300) which comes with a tendon (bowl of rice with tempura toppings) and extra tempura pieces on the side too.

Yatsudeya 八ツ手屋 (Kanda)

If you want a satisfying tendon, you won't go wrong with this shop of long standing - it opened in 1915! The dishes are about ¥1,000 and the portions are very generous. The only down side to this restaurant is that it's only open during the lunch hours on weekdays. This is a must-go when you are in the Kanda area at the right time!
