Coffee Ramen In Tokyo, Here's Where To Have It!
You like coffee and you like ramen? How about having them combined in one mind-blowing coffee-ramen dish! You can have it at Aroma, a neighbourhood restaurant in the east end of Tokyo.
Feel free to follow favy!
With all the regional specialties, there are countless kinds of ramen variations that can be found in Japan. Some are particularly outstanding for being plain bizarre. Falling in this category is the coffee ramen of Aroma, located in the east end of Tokyo, near the Ohanajaya Station.
Aroma isn't really a ramen joint either, it's more of a traditional kind of cafe, a so-called "kissaten".
The Coffee Ramen
The combination of ingredients is as strange as the artwork it is made to be. You'll find bananas, salami, eggs, ice cream, etc, all placed to resemble some kind of tribal mask.
The soup is not pure coffee, rather it's a mix of some kind of salty broth with some coffee mixed into it.
The noodles have a nice springy texture and are pretty typical of what you find in standard ramen.
It's hard to process whether this is good or not; the combination of the bitterness of the coffee and savouriness of the soup was something completely foreign to me, but apparently, there are some fans of this taste. Give it a try if you have the chance, you might actually like it!
If not for the coffee ramen, you should go to Aroma for the decor, all made by the shop's owner. This cafe/ramen joint is one of the most original ones in Tokyo, to say the least...
... and if coffee or ramen isn't your cup of tea, rest assured, you can also order a nice cold beer. That's what most of the locals seemed to be doing when I went.
