Old Bathhouse Converted Into an Izakaya

Bunbuku owners remodeled an old sento to create a casual izakaya pub-style restaurant.

From Sento to Izakaya

Located in Tokyo’s Minato Ward, the bathhouse, formerly called Banzai-yu, served the local community for 90 years. In May 2016, however, it closed its doors to bathers, only to re-open them again to diners as an izakaya restaurant called Bunbuku.

Following a major renovation, the owners managed to retain a lot of the original features from the bathhouse, like the original Mt. Fuji painting, drawn by Morio Nakajima, who is well-known as one of only two fully qualified specialist sento painters of Mt Fuji in all of Japan.
The emptied bathtubs were maintained in their original places and now work as private tables. Patrons can enjoy sitting and dining in the empty tubs or have their own enclosed booths inside of the change rooms.
Bunbuku’s specialties include a number of seafood dishes, like the sashimi moriawase (sushi platter), crab dumplings, or Shuto(salted fish entrails).
Recommended menus are the "assortment of 5 types of sashimi" served in a traditional bath bucket, starting at 3,500 yen.
Being an izakaya, they offer all kinds of alcoholic beverages, but the highlights are the milk cocktails (coffee, strawberry, and matcha), served in milk bottles for 580 yen.
The establishment also offers English menus and English speaking staff.

Next time you want to try something new and fun, try Bunbuku!
