Kochi's Hirome Market (ひろめ市場)

Kochi is a prefecture and city located on the southern coast of Shikoku. The city features beautiful beaches, Kochi Castle, and the Hirome Market (Hirome Ichiba), a large hall of about 65 vendors selling delicious bites of food! If you're in the city, this is one place that you need to check out.

The market has a nostalgic, retro vibe that is a throwback to older times. Among the food stalls, visitors will also see fish sellers, meat vendors, and shops selling clothing and other kinckknacks. Tables line the whole market place, and there are always lots of people hanging out with food and drinks! The locals here are known to have a certain fondness for alcohol, and there is plenty of that available, too! A few years ago, a bar area called 'Hirome Bar' was added, so drink lovers have plenty of options for drinks and food pairings to choose from.

Local Kochi specialty you've got to try: Katsuo no Tataki

Hirome_Ichiba_Market_Bonito
Kochi is famous throughout Japan for having the best katsuo tataki. 'Katsuo no tataki' is bonito (similar to tuna) that has been seared on the outside, but is still fresh on the inside. It's like a smoky sashimi that is utterly delicious! The best place to get some in the market is from a shop called 'Myoji Maru,' where they sear the bonito right in front of you.
