Kyoto is home to many Japanese traditions. You'll find many centuries-old temples and shrines, and you'll also find some of the country's best traditional cuisine! Udon noodle dishes should definitely be on the list of things to try when you are in Kyoto. うどん(Udon) is a type of Japanese traditional thick noodle which comes with a soup called 出汁(Dashi) that is made from seafood broth and soy sauce.

Located near one of the famous sightseeing spots 平安神宮(Heian Jingu), this restaurant is so popular that there is a line on weekends.

揚げ餅みぞれうどん(Agemochi Mizore Udon) is really good and mixes another traditional Japanese food item: the mochi (rich cake). The mochi is deep fried and used as a topping on the Udon. The dish is served with classic dashi soup
つけめん (Tsuke-men) is a kind of cold udon with a hot dipping sauce. The sauce has a strong concentration so you get a more intense taste than what you would get in a soup.

Located a 3-minute walk from Gion Shijo(祇園四条) station. YOROZUYA is also a very popular Udon restaurant in Kyoto. Their udon noodle is thinner than average and easy to eat. Also, the soup is not too salty and delicious enough even to drink to the last drop!

This is an udon restaurant which has a long history in the Okazaki(岡崎) area. The owner has kept the traditional taste of dashi soup ever since they established the enterprise many years ago. It is located next to 山元麺蔵(YAMAMOTO MENZO).

天とじうどん(Tentoji Udon) is a bowl that contains a huge shrimp cooked tempura style. This is another dish that allows you to try two elements of the Japanese food culture in one! The shrimp is paired with fluffy scrambled eggs that cover the udon noodles.

大河 (TAIGA)

Located a 5-minute walk from Keihan Fujimori (京阪藤森) station, the owner learned to make udon in Kanagawa Prefecture where it is often referred to as an Udon mecca. Taiga's homemade Udon noodles are thin and smooth and go well with savory soup.

TANAKAYA is a small street stall in Ide-Cho (井手町) that serves thick and chewy udon noodle. The dashi soup has a little sweetness that would remind most of the Japanese of their mom's udon.

Giwon Tokiwa is located a 10-minute walk from the Gion-Shijo Station. The place is best known for its dashi soup which has a gentle scent and a taste that is not too strong since it is made naturally and yet has a deep umami savory taste that you'll love. The noodles have a pleasant soft texture.
